Stealing Flash Videos

When you view any video on any of the Flash video websites like You Tube you are downloading the whole video to your temporary internet files. They use Progressive Downloads (you download a bit, then another bit).

Now to get the videos is very simple. Watch one on You Tube. Open command prompt.

  1. Type the following:
  2. chdir c:\
  3. dir *.flv /s
  4. Now you will be listed with all the .flv files on the computer.

Now all you have to do is find which video you where looking for.

* Update: Niall Donegan has posted Grabbing flash video from youtube in response to this post for Linux users. But he posts about a way to use ffmpeg to convert the .flv to .mpg. Which is very handy as Windows users will have a little more trouble converting them to an easier viewing format.

How about snatching the flash files from the NBC. com especially The Heroes series?

Rick, thanks for the comment. It depends on if the video is streamed or not and the size of it. If it is streamed, your computer only holds a temp file of X amount of seconds.

But if it is a series (and I am guessing it is a full show) then I am 99% sure it is possible. Have you an address I could see this video and then I would know for sure?

I have been digging around their source page can’t seem to find the link for the flash file in their java script. It might be streamed.
