What is the internet coming to?

Tonight I can’t sleep so I decided to browse the internet and see what is out there. Find cool sites using the latest technology, design techniques and grabbing web 2.0 by the balls and creating it into a work of art. But to my dispear all I have found is websites only fit to be deleted from my browser history.

You would think in this day and age, with the advances in the online community (with design and code) that we would be at a higher level of professionalism. That we would have learned lessions from the past about what works and what doesn’t work. For examples popup or popunder windows don’t work for getting your adverts across. It is standard with browsers and browser add-ons for popup blockers. But there is cases where the plague that is popups gets through. Same with the horrible slide in adverts that are designed to come across to the common internet user as a Windows XP window. And unsuspected users will believe it is a XP window. I have even come across ones that when you use the close button, it turned out to redirect me to a website offering MSN smilies.

Depending on where you live some people could say that MySpace played a key role in the social revolution. But other people could say that MySpace played a key role helping the type of sites I have mentioned above. And some of these sites are so badly constructed they are unviewable in any browser. Take Best MySpace Goodies for instance, above the fold line is only adverts. Below the fold line is a complete mess of links and mismatched code. After taking a look at the HTML I found 6, yes I said 6 doctype tags. 5 HTML4.0 doctypes and 1 xHTML doctype. Even Meta tags after the body tag. One of the sister sites of this website has its code so much in a mess with sloppy html and javascript that it will not open.

Why is it that so many people work so hard on following the web design and development guidelines. And spend hours making sure there are no problems with the code or design across browsers, when there is so many people out there throwing sites together? It is no secret there is to many cowboys online making a living from exploiting people.

So what is the internet coming to?
